40 Years of Changing Lives

Midnight Basketball’s Historic 40th Anniversary Conference & National Tournament

August 2026 | Celebrating 1986 — 2026

Forty years ago, a seed was planted in Glenarden, Maryland, that would grow into a national movement. This year, we stand on the shoulders of giants as we celebrate a milestone that represents hope, resilience, and transformation.

Founded in June 1986 by the visionary G. Van Standifer, Midnight Basketball has spent four decades transforming communities, saving lives, and empowering youth. What began as a local initiative to keep young men safe has evolved into a nationwide legacy of mentorship and opportunity. As we approach our 40th Anniversary, we look back with pride at the lives touched and look forward with renewed energy to the future.

The Origin Story (1986)

In the mid-1980s, G. Van Standifer, a retired FAA worker and town manager of Glenarden, Maryland, observed a troubling trend: crime rates were dangerously high during the late-night hours of 10 PM to 2 AM. He knew that to save the youth, he had to meet them where they were, at the times they were most vulnerable.

In June 1986, Standifer opened the Glenarden Recreation Center and launched the very first Midnight Basketball League. His strategy was simple yet brilliant: use basketball as the “hook” to bring young people off the streets, but require something in return. To play, participants had to attend life-skills workshops and educational sessions. Funded by a mix of private donations and public funds, and supervised by police officers and volunteers, the program became an immediate sanctuary for young men seeking a better path.

National Growth & Historic Impact

The success in Glenarden could not be contained. In the 1990s, the model spread rapidly to cities across America. Dozens of late-night hoops leagues emerged, effectively bridging the gap between sports and social services.

The program’s impact was so profound that President Bill Clinton incorporated Midnight Basketball into the landmark Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. At its peak, over 50 chapters were operating nationwide. Today, the mission continues under the stewardship of the Association of Midnight Basketball Inc., re-established as a non-profit in January 2004 by Lawrence Gray, Jr. and Emanuel Hunt, Jr. to serve as the central administrative body for chapters across the country.

The Impact by the Numbers

The data speaks for itself. Midnight Basketball is not just a game; it is a proven crime prevention strategy.

30% Drop in crime in Glenarden, MD (Original City)

ZERO Murders & robberies during games in select cities

60% Reduction in drug-related crime (LA Times Report)

89% Crime reduction in Fort Worth on game nights

10.4% Fewer juvenile arrests in Phoenix

2006 Study confirms sharper property crime decreases in MB cities

Recent Success: Baltimore’s returned program saw its most improved participation ever with 28 teams and 400+ kids. In Atlanta, data shows car break-ins and homicides are DOWN in areas hosting the program.

Chapter Spotlight: Atlanta

Midnight Basketball Team

The Atlanta Chapter serves as a beacon of excellence. Led by Ramondo Davidson, Director of Recreation, the program operates out of the C.T. Martin Natatorium and Recreation Center (3201 MLK Jr Dr SW). Targeting young men ages 18-25, games run every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 PM.

“When you see that car break-ins are down and homicides are down in these areas where we’re having midnight basketball, it tells me that we’re on the right path.”— Andre Dickens, Mayor of Atlanta

With support from partners like the Atlanta Hawks, the chapter is changing lives on the ground.

“It helped me save my life a lot because I could have been out there doing other things… It helps people in the community come together for once.”— James Sanders, Participant
